What is a Breast Reduction?

Breast reduction, also known as reduction mammoplasty, is a surgical procedure that removes excess fat, glandular tissue, and skin to reduce the size, weight, and firmness of the breasts. With the removal of excess areas, it can significantly reduce pain throughout the body resulting from the large breasts. According to John Hopkins Medicine, “Breast reduction surgery has one of the highest rates of satisfaction of all cosmetic surgery procedures.”1

Reducing the size can also help individuals achieve more youthful-looking breasts, due to their perkier, firmer feel and appearance. Additionally, breast reduction can help create more symmetry for women who have large, asymmetrical breasts.

Who Are the Best Candidates for a Breast Reduction?

According to The American Society of Plastic Surgeons, “The emotional discomfort and self-consciousness often associated with having large pendulous breasts can be as important an issue as the physical discomfort and pain.”2 That’s why at The Nikolov Center for Plastic Surgery in Dubai, you should get breast reduction surgery for yourself, not to fulfill the desires of someone else. Additional characteristics that make a good candidate include those who are:

  • Bothered by the feeling that their breasts were too large for their liking
  • Struggling with exercise as a result of their breasts
  • Dealing with back, neck, and shoulder pain from overly large breasts
  • Suffering from skin irritation beneath the breast crease or on their shoulders from bra straps digging into their skin
  • Healthy and do not have any serious conditions that would interfere with the healing process
  • Non-smokers
  • Capable of having realistic expectations of the results

What’s the First Step?

The best way to decide if a breast reduction is right for you is to get an expert opinion. Here in Dubai, Dr. Nicholas Nikolov would be thrilled to discuss your goals, concerns, struggles with having overly large breasts, and expectations during a scheduled consultation. Dr. Nikolov understands that a breast reduction is a vulnerable procedure to talk about and receive, so he makes sure to approach his patients with empathy, honesty, and support. He will inform you of the different types of incisions used in the procedure, including anchor, vertical, and peri-areolar, and discuss which is the best option for you and why.

Toward the end of the consultation, Dr. Nikolov will inform you whether breast reduction is a good fit for your needs, based on everything discussed, and set you up with a personalized treatment plan.

What to Expect on the Day of Breast Reduction Surgery

Your breast reduction surgery will take place at our office in Dubai. You can expect it to take 2 to 4 hours, but you should clear your schedule, as you will need the rest of the day to recover. Prepare ahead of time by confirming with someone to pick you up after the surgery and take you home to recover.

General anesthesia is usually administered to patients to ensure they are asleep the whole time. Dr. Nikolov will begin the procedure by making incisions along the marked lines in the areas discussed during the consultation. The areas include:

  • Anchor: Combines all three incision locations, including around the areola, down the front of the breast, and along the breast crease
  • Vertical: Only around the areola and down the front of the breast, usually used for moderate reductions
  • Peri-areolar: Best for minor breast reductions, this incision is a single circular incision only around the areola

After the incisions are made, Dr. Nikolov will remove the excess breast tissue, fat, and skin to reshape with liposuction, reshape the breasts, and resize and reposition the nipples (if necessary). The incisions are then closed with sutures to complete the surgery, and you will wake up after the anesthesia is stopped.

Breast Reduction Recovery

After the surgery, an elastic bandage or surgical bra over gauze dressings will be wrapped around you, and Dr. Nikolov may give you a small tube in each treated breast to allow drainage for the first couple of days.

Though bruised and swollen at first, your new breasts will gradually appear natural-looking and youthful over time. To ensure you achieve optimal results, you should follow Dr. Nikolov’s recovery instructions very closely, as ignoring them can be detrimental to the results and your health.

The first 3 or 4 days will require heavy rest and downtime, so you should take time off work. When you do rest, lie on your back, so you don’t put pressure on your breasts. You will continue to feel some discomfort around the incisions and breasts for the next couple of weeks, especially as you walk, sneeze, or cough. Dr. Nikolov will prescribe you pain medication to alleviate the discomfort.

Apply moisturizer to the breast skin several times a day if it feels dry, but make sure to keep the sutures dry.

You can likely return to light work and social activities after 2 weeks, depending on the extent of your surgery. You should avoid strenuous exercise and limit stretching, bending, swimming, and any other activities that strain your breasts and cause pain. We also recommend avoiding intercourse for at least a week, as sexual arousal can make your incisions swell. You may resume regular exercise at 4 weeks, and after around 6 weeks, you should be able to resume all normal activities with your lighter breasts!

How Much Does a Breast Reduction Cost in Dubai, UAE?
